How ChatGPT and AI shopping assistants read your Shopify products

In March 2026 Shopify turned on agentic storefronts for eligible stores: your products can now be shown and bought inside ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot and Gemini through Shopify Catalog. You don't write anything special for these assistants — they read the same product data you already have. That's the good news and the problem: if your data is thin, the assistant has little to work with.

What the assistants receive

According to Shopify, AI channels get your product title, description, options (variants), images, price and availability, plus the product category and its attributes. Shopify's own advice is to use the most specific category possible and literal, descriptive language rather than marketing names. Nobody outside the AI companies knows their exact ranking rules — so think of this as making sure the facts are there, not as a trick.

The 7 fixes that matter most

  1. Say what the product is in the title. "Midnight Dream" tells an assistant nothing; "Midnight Dream – Wireless Headphones" does. Keep the name, add the type.
  2. Set the Shopify product category (Products → Category), and pick the most specific one that is actually true.
  3. Fill the category attributes that appear under the category — color, size, material, fabric. Assistants use them to answer "red, waterproof, size 9" questions. If your variants already say "Color: Black", the attribute should say it too.
  4. Write a description that answers questions: what it is, who it's for, how it's used, and concrete specs (material, size, weight, care). Short paragraphs and bullet points.
  5. Name your variant options clearly — "Size" and "Color", not "Option1".
  6. Add image alt text that describes what's in the photo. It's how machines (and screen readers) "see" images.
  7. Keep price and stock accurate, and add real barcodes (GTIN/UPC/EAN) where you have them — never invent one.

What not to do

Doing this for hundreds of products

Checking one product is easy; checking 500 isn't. Listproof scans every product, explains each issue in plain English, and fixes what can be fixed safely in bulk — categories, category attributes from your own variants and descriptions, alt text, title and description clean-ups. Nothing changes until you approve it, every change can be undone in one click, and fixes use only your own product details.
