Shopify category attributes (color, size, material): what they are and how to fill them

When you choose a product category in Shopify (Products → Category), Shopify shows a set of category attributes under it — for a T-shirt: color, size, fabric, neckline, sleeve length; for headphones: connectivity, color. Technically they are "category metafields". They matter because they are structured facts: filters in your store, Shopify's own search, and AI shopping assistants (ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini) can use them to answer questions like "black waterproof hiking boots, size 9".

Why most stores leave them empty

They are filled per product, by hand. A store with 300 products and 5 attributes each has 1,500 fields to fill. In our tests on a sample catalog, 203 of 215 products had no attributes at all — even though the same facts were already written in variant options ("Color: Black, Olive") and descriptions ("100% organic cotton").

How to fill them correctly

  1. Set the most specific true category first. The available attributes depend on it.
  2. Copy facts you already have. If a variant option is "Color: Navy", the Color attribute should be Navy (its base color is Blue). If your description says "sterling silver", Jewelry material is Sterling silver.
  3. Only add what's true for the whole product. "Leather upper, rubber sole" doesn't tell you the lining material — leave it empty rather than guess.
  4. Don't overwrite values you set on purpose. Fill empty ones.
  5. Note: Shopify allows each attribute only on certain categories; sometimes an attribute shown for a category can't actually be saved on it. That's expected — skip it.

Doing it in bulk, safely

Listproof reads your variant options and descriptions, suggests attribute values only when they're literally in your data and match Shopify's official values, and shows a preview. Nothing changes until you approve, and every change can be undone in one click.
