Shopify product titles for ChatGPT and AI shopping
When a shopper asks an AI assistant for "a waterproof hiking boot under $150", the assistant has to work out what each product is before it can recommend it. The title is the first thing it reads. Shopify's own advice for AI channels is short: use clear, accurate and detailed product information. For titles, that mostly means one thing — say what the product is.
What we found in 8,266 products
We scored the public product data of 23 well-known Shopify brands. The problem wasn't keyword stuffing or ALL-CAPS — those were almost nonexistent. It was titles that are only a name:
- About 1 in 5 titles (1,706 of 8,266) don't say what kind of product it is — for example, a lip stain called only "Strawberry Glaze", or a shoe called only by its style name.
- About 18% of titles are under 20 characters.
- Titles starting with marketing words ("Best", "Amazing") were under 1%.
Method: a title counts as "doesn't say what it is" when it contains neither the store's own product type nor a common product word (shirt, boot, candle, lipstick…). We read flagged titles by hand to tune this; a few misses remain, so treat the numbers as close estimates.
A simple title formula
Name or style + product type + one key detail
- ❌ Strawberry Glaze → ✅ Strawberry Glaze Lip Stain
- ❌ Midnight Dream → ✅ Midnight Dream Wireless Headphones, Over-Ear
- ❌ Cloud Runner → ✅ Cloud Runner Men's Sneakers, Merino Wool
- ❌ BEST SELLER!! Candle → ✅ Lavender Soy Wax Candle, 200 g
Keep your brand-style name — shoppers search for it too. Just add the plain words a shopper would use.
What to avoid
- Repeating keywords ("boots winter boots snow boots") — it reads as spam to people and machines.
- Prices, discounts or "sale" in the title — they go stale.
- ALL CAPS and marketing-only words.
- Very long titles — put details like materials and sizes in the description and variant options instead.

Shopify's Catalog mapping lets you tell Shopify Catalog (the feed behind ChatGPT, Copilot and Google AI Mode) to read the title, description or category from a custom field such as a metafield. So a store can keep "Strawberry Glaze" on the product page and send "Strawberry Glaze Lip Stain" to AI channels.
Titles are only one part
