Shopify products not showing in ChatGPT? The Shopify Catalog checklist
Shopify sends your products to AI shopping channels — ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta — through Shopify Catalog. Shopify calls this agentic storefronts, and it's on by default for eligible stores. There's no app or feed to set up. But a product only gets there if it passes a few rules, and many stores have products that quietly don't.
Step 1: is the channel turned on?
In your Shopify admin go to Sales channels → Agentic. That's where you choose which AI channels your products are sold on. If a channel is off there, nothing else on this page matters.
Step 2: product rules (check every product)
According to Shopify's Catalog requirements, each product must:
- Have a title and at least one product image. Products with no image are left out.
- Have a price greater than zero. Free products aren't included.
- Be published to your Online Store (or Hydrogen / Headless), with a normal product URL.
- Not be Unlisted or hidden from search engines. Setting a product to Unlisted removes it from AI channels, sitemaps and search on purpose.
- Not contain sensitive content, such as mature content.
Products published only to B2B catalogs, products that need a customer login, and anything behind a password-protected storefront are also left out automatically.
Step 3: store and account rules
- Your store is on the Starter plan or higher and is not in private mode (no storefront password).
- Your account is in good standing: verified email, two-step authentication on, identity/business verification done when asked, a track record of genuine sales, orders fulfilled on time, a low chargeback rate, invoices paid on time, and no open policy issues.
This is why a brand-new store with no sales yet may not show up even when every product is perfect.
Step 4: data stored in custom fields?
If your real titles, descriptions or categories live in metafields, metaobjects or tags (common after migrating from another platform), Shopify's Catalog mapping lets you tell it where to read them from. Otherwise AI channels see only the standard fields.
What we found in real stores
We checked the public product data of 23 well-known Shopify brands (8,273 products) against these product rules. Most items that failed were deliberate — "bundle checkout" helpers, free totes and samples priced at 0, or old out-of-stock products. But 10 in-stock products at 4 brands (towel and sheet sets, a shirt, pants, a fleece, a hat) had no image at all, so under Shopify's rules they can't appear in AI shopping — and Shopify doesn't warn you about it. If that happens at well-run brands, it's worth checking your own store.
Eligible is not the same as recommended
Passing the rules only gets a product into the catalog. Whether an assistant picks it for a shopper's question depends on how well your data answers that question. No one outside the AI companies knows their exact ranking, but Shopify's own guidance points to the same basics:
- Titles that say what the product is (how AI assistants read products)
- Descriptions with concrete facts — material, size, use
- The right product category and its attributes like color and size (category attributes guide)
- Image alt text that describes the photo (alt text guide)
Check your store in 30 seconds
The free Listproof checker lists in-stock products that break a Catalog rule (no image) — setting aside free gifts, bundle helpers and old stock — and scores the titles, descriptions and variants AI assistants read. It can't see your plan or account standing — check those in your admin.
