Shopify product descriptions for ChatGPT and AI shopping
Shoppers ask AI assistants specific questions: "is it 100% cotton?", "will it fit a 15-inch laptop?", "how long does the candle burn?". An assistant can only answer from facts that are written down. Shopify's advice for AI channels is to use clear, accurate and detailed product information — for descriptions, that means facts, not just mood.
What we found in 8,265 products
We checked the public product data of 23 well-known Shopify brands:
- About 1 in 10 products had no description at all.
- Among those with one, half were shorter than about 300 characters (roughly 50 words).
- About 1 in 4 descriptions named no material and no measurement (size, volume, weight) — only marketing prose like "perfect for your everyday look".
- Only about 31% used a bullet list.
Method: "no material and no measurement" means the text contains no material word (cotton, leather, soy wax…) and no number with a unit (200 ml, 15 in, 30 mm). We read flagged descriptions by hand to tune this; treat the numbers as close estimates.
A simple structure that works
- One sentence: what it is and who it's for. "A 25 L laptop backpack for daily commuting."
- A short bullet list of facts — only the ones that are true for this product:
- Material: "100% recycled polyester", "soy wax", "925 sterling silver"
- Size or capacity: "fits laptops up to 15 inches", "200 ml", "burns about 40 hours"
- What's included: "comes with a dust bag"
- Care: "machine washable at 30°C"
- Compatibility or fit: "fits iPhone 16", "runs true to size"
- Then your brand story, if you want one. Keep it after the facts, not instead of them.
Before and after
Before: "Our favorite bag yet. Made for the way you move — go anywhere, carry everything."
After: "A 25 L backpack for work and travel.
• Fits laptops up to 15 inches (padded sleeve)
• Recycled polyester, water-resistant
• Luggage strap and hidden back pocket
Our favorite bag yet — made for the way you move."
What to avoid
- Inventing facts. If you don't know the exact weight, leave it out. A wrong fact is worse than a missing one — shoppers return products, and assistants repeat what you wrote.
- One long paragraph. Bullets are easier for shoppers and machines to scan.
- Copy-pasting the same text across different products — say what's different about each one.
Descriptions and category attributes work together
Facts in your description (color, material, size) can also go into Shopify's structured category attributes, which AI channels and store filters read directly. Listproof reads your own options and text, suggests matching attribute values, and can turn a long paragraph into bullet points — it never adds facts that aren't already in your product data.
